Pelargonium

Pelargonium
Oil On Canvas
July 2008

Like most other people I really call these “Geraniums” though I’m told that’s not correct. While the names are lovely, the flower itself is dazzling. I’ve always been drawn to these plants in window boxes, on sills. They make a house look so welcoming. The variety I have managed to keep growing from cuttings of itself, year after year, has extraordinarily bright red blooms. The petals vibrate at the edges as though there’s a colour there you can’t quite see because it’s not visible to the human eye. You just sense that it’s there. – for the bees perhaps?…It’s a colour I couldn’t make or find in a tube, so I had to make everything else in the painting more muted and dull to try and capture the vibrancy of those blooms and highlight their glorious colour.
