I used to work in the Sterile Services Department of a hospital. One of my favourite people there was Sister Helen Calkin who specialised in Orthopaedics. She was also a keen photographer and she loved going on Motor-biking tours with her boyfriend Kevin. The bikes would get them to pretty remote places and her photos were often stunning. Helen was always very encouraging of my painting too and wanted a different kind of record of her travels. This picture was painted from one of her photographs and later exhibited in Debut, my first solo show. When the exhibition was over, I gave her the painting for her birthday. It was, after all, “Helen’s Highlands”.
