Contrapposto is one of my favourite poses to stand in or draw. The Greeks were very fond of this relaxed stance with a tilt in the pelvis and it instantly conjures up a “classical” feel to any drawing or sculpture and it’s a very comfortable position to hold for lengthy periods of time. Contrapposto literally means counter-pose and is a “curving or asymmetrical arrangement of the human figure with the shoulders, hips and legs in different planes” usually brought about by standing with most weight on one leg. David by Michaelangelo and the Venus de Milo are probably the two best known examples of this pose in sculpture.
